How to Be a Ghost
by Jonah Leisure
Christina stepped over the dead bushes that surrounded the house. She glanced over her shoulder, checking to see if anybody noticed her trespassing. She entered through a window and peered into the dark, cobwebbed living room.
“Are you here?”
A loud thud came from behind. Christina spun around to see the ghost right in front of her. Despite being a spirit, he had glistening eyes and a wide smile.
They had been seeing each other for a while now. Christina hadn’t mentioned William to anyone. Nobody would believe that a girl and ghost could - or would - be together.
She blushed. “I’m ready for my final lesson.”
How to Be a Ghost. It was something that William offered to teach Christina. “There’s a way you can become what I am without dying, you know,” he told her. He claimed that if she were to become a spirit, together they could leave the house that he had been trapped in for so long.
“Close your eyes. Think back to our last session on astral projection. I want you to think. Where would you go? What would you do? Focus on me, on us.”
Christina focused profusely.
“I want you to think about what you want to leave behind in your life,” he said. “Count to 10. See yourself floating, crossing over.”
She counted.
“Alright, when you’re ready, open your eyes. Congratulations.”
Christina saw William, less pale and walking across the floor, opening the front door. He turned to her, flashing a sly smirk. “You’re the new ghost of Woodrow Manor.”
“Where are you going?” she asked, confused. She glanced down to see her new ghostly form, floating high above the floorboards.
“Where do you think I’m going? I’ve got a life to live.”
“You tricked me!” Christina shouted. Furious, she floated down to the front walkway and tried to wrap her hands around William’s neck. But it was no use. Her cold fingers went right through him.
“Thanks for being maybe the most gullible girl in decades,” he said, one foot already out the door. “Hopefully one day, you’ll come across a boy who’s as naive as you.”
Christina’s loud cry was interrupted by the slamming of the door. She was now alone. The only sound left ringing in the house was the ticking of the grandfather clock.
The only thing visible on Christina’s now-transparent face were her stream of tears.
